What is Sachkunde? The Subject Expat Parents Always Underestimate

Most parents focus on German language and Maths — but Sachkunde is the hidden exam subject that catches expat children off guard. Here's what it covers and why it matters.

When expat parents ask me which subjects to prioritise in Grundschule, they almost always say: German and Maths. Sachkunde rarely comes up — until it does.

What Sachkunde Actually Is

Sachkunde (literally "factual knowledge") is Germany's primary school general studies subject. It combines:

  • Natural sciences: plants, animals, weather, the human body
  • Geography: maps, local area, Germany's regions, basic world geography
  • Social studies: community, local government, occupations, family structures
  • History: local and German history, timelines, historical figures
  • Health and safety: traffic rules, healthy eating, first aid basics

It is assessed with written tests, class work, and oral participation — and it feeds into the recommendation that follows primary school.

Why Expat Children Struggle

The content of Sachkunde is heavily culturally and geographically specific. A child who has grown up outside Germany will have gaps that a local child won't:

  • German state capitals and geography
  • German seasonal traditions and their significance
  • Specific German historical events and figures
  • German traffic rules and signs (yes, these are tested)

Beyond content, the subject is taught and tested entirely in German — and uses specialised vocabulary that isn't covered in general language classes.

What Good Sachkunde Preparation Looks Like

  1. Use the actual curriculum: Each German state publishes its Lehrplan. We work directly from your child's state curriculum, not generic materials.
  2. Build vocabulary lists by topic: Animals and ecosystems, seasons and weather, the local community — each topic has key terms your child needs to know cold.
  3. Practice written answers: Sachkunde tests require children to write in complete sentences. This is a German literacy skill as much as a content skill.

How We Help

Our Sachkunde course for Grundschule Grades 1–4 is taught in German, using the curriculum vocabulary your child's teacher will test. We cover content and language together — because in Sachkunde, they are inseparable.
