Primary school in Sachsen lasts four years, and children usually move on in Grade 5. Gymnasium is the academic pathway that leads to the Abitur, and the Oberschule is the other main secondary school type.
A Gymnasium recommendation normally needs an average of 2.0 or better in German, maths and Sachunterricht (primary general studies), with none of those grades 4 or worse. The school also looks at learning habits and development.
Without a recommendation, parents can still apply. Your child then takes a written assessment, followed by a mandatory parent guidance meeting. If the Gymnasium also recommends Oberschule, you must confirm in writing within three weeks that you are keeping your Gymnasium application.
One detail worth knowing: missing the mandatory guidance meeting counts as withdrawing the application, so keep proof of any written confirmation you send.
This page describes the ordinary move from primary school. Later transfers into Gymnasium, and specialist schools with their own profiles, can have different requirements.
The main route
A Gymnasium recommendation normally requires an average of 2.0 or better in German, maths and Sachunterricht (primary general studies), with none of these grades 4 or worse. The school also considers whether learning habits and development support Gymnasium success.
If the usual route does not fit
Without a Gymnasium recommendation, parents can still apply. The child takes a written assessment, followed by a mandatory parent guidance meeting. If the Gymnasium also recommends Oberschule, parents must confirm in writing within three weeks that they maintain the Gymnasium application.
Good to know
Missing the mandatory guidance meeting counts as withdrawing the application. The written assessment is part of this guidance procedure; it should not be described as a simple pass-or-fail admission test.
This section describes the ordinary move from primary school. Later transfers into Gymnasium, and specialist schools with their own profiles, follow separate requirements.
