Primary school in Niedersachsen lasts four years, and children usually move on in Grade 5. Gymnasium is the academic pathway that leads to the Abitur, and the state also offers other secondary school types with different leaving qualifications.
Parents decide which secondary school type their child attends. There is no binding statewide Gymnasium grade cutoff for this ordinary transition.
Instead, the primary school offers at least two guidance meetings in Grade 4, and your child should be included in them. A recommendation for a school pathway can be given on request and recorded in the guidance notes.
One detail worth knowing: deciding on a school type and getting a place at one particular school are two separate questions. Your preferred school's available places and its local application arrangements still matter.
This page describes the ordinary move from primary school. Later transfers into Gymnasium, and specialist schools with their own profiles, can have different requirements.
