Primary school in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lasts four years, but children usually spend Grades 5 and 6 in an Orientierungsstufe, an orientation stage where the school type is not yet fixed. They move to Gymnasium in Grade 7.
Entry is guided by the Grade 6 half-year recommendation. It supports Gymnasium when the average in German, maths and the first foreign language is 2.5 or better, with no grade below 4 in those subjects.
Parents can choose Gymnasium even without that recommendation. If you do, Grade 7 is an Erprobungsschuljahr (trial year): if it is not completed successfully, your child has to leave that pathway.
One detail worth knowing: some music, sports or gifted programmes start earlier and have their own suitability procedures, so ask about those separately.
This page describes the ordinary move into Gymnasium. Later transfers, and specialist schools with their own profiles, can have different requirements.
The main route
Children usually spend Grades 5 and 6 in a school-type-independent orientation stage. The Grade 6 half-year recommendation supports Gymnasium when the average in German, maths and the first foreign language is 2.5 or better, with no grade below 4 in those subjects.
If the usual route does not fit
Parents can choose Gymnasium even without that recommendation. Grade 7 at Gymnasium is an Erprobungsschuljahr (trial year). If it is not completed successfully, the child must leave that pathway.
Good to know
Some music, sports or gifted pathways start earlier and have separate suitability procedures. 'Later selection' does not mean that school types or entry requirements do not exist.
This section describes the ordinary move from primary school. Later transfers into Gymnasium, and specialist schools with their own profiles, follow separate requirements.
